Barrier properties

Barrier properties for plastic materials mean no or a very low permeability (diffusion) of gases (e.g. oxygen), vapours (e.g. water vapour) and aromas. Molecular material transport of liquid and gaseous substances through non-porous solids is defined as permeation.

There are numerous findings and publications on this topic, which we can also discuss here in a very detailed and scientific way. But we want to refrain from too much detail in this context. 

Instead, we want to provide you with an important mnemonic:
The question whether the barrier effect of plastic is efficient with regard to its correct usage (filling material, storing time, storage temperature) can only be assessed by taking all influencing factors into consideration: type and thickness of plastic; migrating substance: its molecular weight and solubility in plastic; storing time and storage temperature; nature of the filling material.
